Planetary nebula luminosity

WebJan 10, 2024 · The planetary nebulae luminosity function (PNLF) is one of very few techniques that can provide distance estimates to within ∼10%; however, it requires a planetary nebula (PN) sample that is uncontaminated by other ionizing sources. WebWe show that the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) of M87's halo is unlike any PNLF observed to date, with a shape that differs from that of the empirical law at the 99.9% confidence level. In addition, we find that the PNLF of M87's outer halo differs from that of the galaxy's inner regions at a high degree of certainty (∼92%).

A dark nebula is a cloud of gas and dust and blocks the light of distant stars that lie behind it. I would assume the dark nebula is colder because it blocks light and its a cloud of gas. 5. WebMay 16, 2024 · So, it seems as if the sun may indeed form a planetary nebula as it dies. According to the new model, this nebula is likely to have a luminosity function (a constant of brightness) in line with other nebulae developing throughout the galaxy and the wider universe. But this is not the only factor affecting nebula brightness. WebThe central stars in young planetary nebulae are about as hot as the massive O and B stars—35,000–40,000 K—but roughly 10 times fainter. They have half the diameter of …

WebMay 9, 2024 · Planetary nebulae -- massive rings of luminous, interstellar gas and dust -- mark the end of the active life of 90% of all stars. But, for years, astronomers weren’t sure if the Sun would follow the same fate -- until now. University of Manchester’s Professor Albert Zijlstra and colleagues predict the Sun will form a faint planetary nebula. WebThe name ‘planetary nebula’ captured the confusion well and has been used ever since (Hoskin, 2014). Coincidentally, 2014 is also an important 150th anniversary: the first ever spectrum of a planetary nebula (the Cat’s eye nebula) was obtained by William Huggins on August 29, 1864, and it finally revealed their true nature (Huggins & Miller, 1864 ) .
